Mental Health & Substance Use Program

AMANI’s Mental Health & Substance Use Program, formerly known as “SAPACCY” (Substance Abuse Program for African Canadian and Caribbean Youth, pronounced SA-PAH-SEE) provides free, culturally responsive care for Black youth and their families/caregivers who are in need of mental health and/or substance use support.

Our program aims to improve mental wellness for Black youth and their family/caregivers by ensuring they have equitable access to mental health and substance use services and supports when needed.

Our Services

Our Mental Health & Substance Use Program provides free hospital and community-based mental health and/or substance use services that are holistic, anti-oppressive, Africentric, and culturally responsive for Black youth, ages 12–29, and their families/caregivers.

Explore the services available through our Mental Health &
Substance Use Program below.

Assessment and Treatment Planning

This process helps us better understand what mental health challenges you might be facing and together, we can come up with goals and appropriate activities. During your assessment, we’ll explore biological, psychological, cultural and social factors that contribute to mental health and substance use so we can create a treatment plan that promotes positive personal growth and development.

Counselling

Talk-based approach that helps us address any issues in your life through assessments, setting goals, finding ways to cope and providing mental health education and resources.

Psychotherapy

Specific kind of talk-based therapy that uses proven and effective treatments with the goal of improving mental wellness. This can be especially helpful for people whose emotional or psychological challenges are negatively impacting their everyday lives and social relationships.

Psychiatry

Diagnosis (identifying what a potential mental, emotional or behavioural disorder could be) and providing treatment based on your symptoms. This also includes prescribing medications and monitoring how they work for you.

Group Therapy

Form of psychotherapy in which one or more trained therapists work with a group of people with similar goals at the same time. Group therapy can relieve distress through talking and expressing feelings; help change attitudes, behaviours or habits that might be unhelpful; and promote helpful new ways of managing wellness. Some groups may focus on providing members with information about specific issues or teaching them coping skills.

Caregivers Support Groups

Group programs offering support and education for caregivers and/or family members of Black youth with mental health or substance use issues.

Case Management

A collaborative and planned approach where service providers work together with people to access social services and ensure people are getting services and support when they need them to make progress toward their goals.

Mental Health Promotion

Programs and activities that address the things that can impact mental health (like housing, financial issues, food insecurity, racism, etc.) with the goal of reducing barriers and improving mental health among Black youth, families, caregivers and communities.
